WHAT IS CALISTHENICS?
Calisthenics is a uniquely Australian sport for participants of all ages. It is a combination of controlled exercise – including club swinging and rod twisting exercises; marching; simplified ballet; folk and modern dance; all set to music and choreographed with artistry designed to develop strength, grace, confidence and poise in the students.Calisthenics combines the finest points of sport and art. As a sport encourages physical development and coordination, self discipline and team spirit. As an art it develops an appreciation of music and rhythm, the beauty of line, balance and composition with the excitement of stage presentation.
HOW IT ALL BEGAN
Calisthenics, as it is known today, has developed from various forms of exercise and dance dating as far back as the gold rush days. Calisthenic competitions have been held since the early 1900s. In Western Australia calisthenics was started in 1957.
WHO IS CALISTHENICS FOR?
Girls from 3 years to adult can and do, participate in, and enjoy, calisthenics. They are involved in many areas, including:
- Participation
- Coaching
- Team Managing
- Costume Designing
- Committees
Parents, both male and female are strongly encouraged to take supportive, administrative and backstage roles in the calisthenic clubs throughout Australia. In fact it is imperative that we have family support for our sport to grow and strengthen.
THE BENEFITS
While the sport is spectacular to watch, it has much to offer its participants. From a very early age the children develop self-discipline, teamwork and high self esteem. Physical fitness, a healthy lifestyle, confidence, loyalty and a strong emphasis on camaraderie are also integral components of calisthenics.
This accreditation must be updated on an annual basis to ensure that the coaches remain in touch with the continual changes and progressions within calisthenics and sport in general.
WHAT ARE THE GIRLS WORKING TOWARDS?
Apart from the benefits previously outlined calisthenics gives the girls the opportunity to perform on stage at various competitions and at the club’s Presentation Concert. More will be explained about these later in the booklet.
