THE CALISTHENICS ASSOCIATION OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA INC.
The CAWA has several affiliated branches with an overall membership of some 1100 active members.
It is a non-profit incorporated organization headed by a Board of Management which is elected at an Annual General Meeting (currently held in March).
The CAWA headquarters – The Swan Park Theatre – is situated in Gray Drive, Midvale and is part of the Swan Park Recreation Centre – the history of which is as follows:
Prior to 1973 “The Girls Rhythmic League(G.R.L.) did not have a headquarters.
In 1973 the G.R.L. acquired a hall and adjoining building in Churchlands, which was to be a training venue, meeting room facility and office for the League. It continued to house the G.R.L. (later to become the “Calisthenics Association of Western Australia Inc.”) until September 1988, when it was realized that the needs of the Association had far outgrown the facility. With the approval of all affiliated branches the property at Churchlands was sold to a developer.
Thus the beginning of a new and exciting venture for the CAWA and its members.
In 1988 the CAWA was granted land in Midvale on which to build a facility which would cater to the growing needs of the association well into the future. In 1990, after many months of hard work, donation of goods, services and precious time, a group of dedicated CAWA members completed building a 680-seat theatre with a full size elevated stage, and all the facilities needed to run the theatre.
The CAWA now has “A Home” which is suitable not only for all calisthenic events but is regularly hired to ballet and dancing schools. It has also been used on several occasions by The WA Ballet Company
THE HILLS DISTRICT CALISTHENICS CLUB
Welcome to our club. “Hills District” has been operating in the Hills region for forty six years, and is one of the largest and most successful branches of the Calisthenics Association of Western Australia. Our base is the Darling Range Sports College (previously Forrestfield Senior High School) and most of our classes are held in the school gymnasium. In recent years we have conducted our younger classes in High Wycombe at the Community Centre as well as second trainings for some classes at Mills Park Centre in Beckenham.
The calisthenic year runs parallel with the school year. Our classes commence the first week of first term and usually finish at the end of November.
Our club is fortunate to have very talented and dedicated coaches and cadet coaches. It is a requirement of the Calisthenics Association of WA that cadet coaches undergo an intensive training program before qualifying as a coach. All qualified coaches must also be accredited in accordance with the criteria laid down and approved by the Australian Sports Commission. This accreditation must be updated on an annual basis to ensure that the coaches remain in touch with the continual changes and progressions within calisthenics and sport in general.
